The Coalition Against the Deportation of Palestinian Refugees and the
Palestinian Right to Return Coalition of North America (Al-Awda), invite
you to an evening of music and singing performed by Al-Awda a folkloric
musical group from Palestine. On August 21st 2004, it is one of the rare
times in recent years that a group of Palestinian musicians from  1948
Palestine and the Golan Heights will be presenting a show of rich
traditional
Palestinian music. The group will be in Montreal as part of a North American
tour with stops in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, New Jersey, New York and DC.

The event in Montreal aims to raise funds for the Coalition Against the
Deportation
Of Palestinian Refugees which represents the ongoing struggle against the
deportation of Palestinian refugees from Canada. This event and the North
American tour of Al-Awda will also fundraise toward building Palestine
community centers throughout North America.

The Al-Awda group is part of the Zaitoun Association which was formed in
Palestine by artists and musicians from the Galilee in 2000. The Zaitoun
Association's goal is to preserve Palestinian culture and work on
deepening ties between Palestinians and their culture. The name "Zaitoun"
in Arabic means olives. It was chosen to demonstrate Palestinians strong
attachment to their land, particularly to the olive tree with all the
symbolism of resistance, history and culture it carries.

Through their music Al-Awda aims to express the feeling of Palestinian
suffering and resistance through music written in complex Arabic notes.
The group specializes in singing and playing traditional cultural songs,
in addition to modern music. Al-Awda's music is also viewed as a cultural
representation of the central issue to the ongoing Palestinian liberation
struggle, the right of return for refugees to 1948 Palestine.
