March held in support of Palestinian refugees Canadian Press / Globe and Mail
Saturday, July 19, 2003 Montreal - About 200 people marched through downtown Montreal on Saturday demanding dozens of the city's Palestinian refugees be spared deportation. A coalition of community groups told a news conference Friday it has asked Immigration Minister Denis Coderre to halt the deportation of the refugees and give them Canadian citizenship. About 100 refugees, who have lived in Canada for several years, face squalid conditions in camps located in Lebanon and nearby Palestinian territories, said the coalition.
Those who are returned overseas would have no right to own property, no access to medical care and no freedom of movement, the group added.
The coalition includes Palestinian and Asian associations, as well as left-wing activist groups.
They say 89 other groups from across Canada support the refugees.
